Abstract
This study qualitatively explores the effects of personal and professional experiences on the evolution of self-authorship through in-depth case studies of four successful female executives. The study is grounded in Baxter Magolda's (2004a) theory of the evolution of self-authorship development, which portrays development along epistemological, interpersonal, and intrapersonal constructs. After assessing each woman's self-authorship development, the study sought to identify in each case: (1) the experiences that contributed to that development, (2) the career changes experienced due to the development, (3) the outcomes of self-authorship on workplace performance and professional development, and (4) the systems of support for self-authorship development. In addition, analyses sought to identify other unique qualifies, attributes, systems of self understanding, and individual distinctions identifiable beyond the scope of the Baxter Magolda model. Implications/recommendations for practice and further research were drawn from a cross-case discussion.
