Abstract
SSRs and RAPDs from regions previously associated with kernel sugars on chromosomes 2, 3 and 6 were explored as additional mapping strategies. A new population of 308 F2:3 families was derived from near-isogenic inbreds IL451b (su1 Se1) X IL451b (su1 se1). The population was grown in replicated trials during 2000 and 2001 and harvested at 21 days after pollination (DAP) to evaluate kernel sugars. Sucrose, glucose and fructose were quantified using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The data indicate families and years are significantly different, and there is a strong family x year interaction for all sugars measured. Data showed a bimodal distribution among sucrose and fructose measurements for the se1se1 genotype each year. SSR and RAPD markers from regions previously associated with kernel sugars did not identify a linked marker for se1.
