Abstract
Teachers of struggling readers should consider implementing a social constructivist approach for reading instruction that includes components of equity such as, explicit strategy instruction and performance assessment in order to provide an opportunity for all students to learn. Teachers also should provide structures for independent reading of self-selected materials.
