Abstract
Despite continuous archaeological investigations for more than a century, the domestic sphere in Carthage remains only superficially understood. In this dissertation, therefore, I examine all extant sources of evidence for post-Roman housing in Carthage, in order to understand more clearly not only the later history of Carthage but also its place among other cities in the rapidly changing post-Roman Mediterranean. Through the creation and analysis of new distributions maps based on nineteenth century excavations of houses as well as more recently excavated houses, a more nuanced reading of the domestic sphere in Carthage is presented, revealing shifting domestic and social paradigms in Carthage as it is transformed from major urban, Roman metropolis to early medieval town on the periphery of the Byzantine empire.
