Abstract
"As a result, the purpose of the research in this dissertation is not only to study strategic technology planning within a single firm, but also to explore strategic technology planning between firms that work together in the product realization process in a ""chain"" or ""network"" of firms, referred to as a ""value system"". During this research, it was noted that regardless of the amount invested, the new technology planning process often fails. Firms develop technologies that are never commercialized, or firms do not have technologies ready when they are demanded in the marketplace. One such failure was observed in the upstream flow of product attribute forecast information, often used to drive the technology planning process in the supply chain of the electronics industry. Such failure events were caused by an increased distortion in the information flow between the different firms involved. It was also observed that this issue in the technology planning process is analogous to the ""bullwhip effect"" in supply chain management (SCM). Therefore, a solution approach similar to the one in SCM was applied. Specifically, research was done in quantifying and modeling this issue, which in this research work it received the name of ""Product Attribute Bullwhip"" effect in the strategic technology planning process in the value system. The overall objective of this research is to develop new insights into strategic technology management that help coordinate technology planning activities more efficiently through the use of roadmaps between firms in the value system."
