Abstract
"The history of Chilean television provides a useful and provocative context for such an analysis. During the 1970s, and early 1980s, the rise of national broadcasting infrastructure, mass viewing practices, and state-controlled programming in Chile created a national media space governed by authoritarian and commercial logics imposed by the military regime of General Pinochet. During the 1988 plebiscite campaign, however, a radical shift occurred in the logics shaping that space, galvanizing opposition to Pinochet and catalyzing a transition toward civilian rule. During the early 1990s, privatization, foreign investment, and technological renovation dramatically transformed Chilean television once again. In the wake of these changes, television infrastructure and policy are still shaped by national logics, but these are increasingly mediated by regional and global logics of capital. ""Chile,"" as it is constituted by television infrastructure and policy, is a transnation---a transnational articulation of national space."
