Abstract
"The analysis of these sites has four goals. The empirical goal is to critically investigate the discourses surrounding eating disorders in a situation where most research has focused on explaining them. The second objective is a methodological one. By mixing historical, theoretical and autobiographical methods and modes of writing, the author has worked toward a research approach that combines the analysis of wide historical and global developments, minute institutional logics, and the intensity of our emotional experiences. Thirdly, by examining how theoretical ideas about the body and self are translated into prescriptions for women with eating disorders, the thesis explores the problems and possibilities inherent in these hotly debated concepts. The political goal of this dissertation is to explore the historically contingent and politically invested nature of the discourses around eating disorders in order to open up more space to invent other ""truths"" about us and the society."
