Abstract
The aim of this dissertation is to examine the changing relationships of space, communication technologies, and society by focusing on the recent modern urban history of Seoul from 1970 to 2000. In this dissertation, I attempt to understand the history of Seoul as it has experienced movement and stasis. The concept of mobility organizes this dissertation. By relying upon the recent developments in theories of culture, space, communication technologies, my dissertation explores how certain practices, technologies and knowledge that channel, determine, and facilitate mobilities are enmeshed in the historical making of the modern city. In particular, in contextualizing multiple forms of mobilities in varied efforts of producing space, I analyze how Seoul has been a city of mobility and how people in Seoul has experienced and perceived the changing urban built environment for the last few decades.
