Abstract
The project adopts an institutional approach and investigates the dialectic between the evolution of Chinese culture and the evolution of Chinese advertising regulation in the last two decades. It provides an in-depth analysis of the development of Chinese advertising regulation since 1979 in its ever-evolving political-economic context and identifies the major characteristics of the Chinese advertising regulation system. It is the author's argument that, because of the increasing divergence between the Chinese economy and Chinese politics, Chinese advertising regulation has entailed two parallel and contradictory agendas: maintaining the market order and propagandizing the Chinese socialist ideology.
