Abstract
Visual images and narratives create certain meanings, and not others, about nursing. Since gender plays a pivotal role in understandings about nursing it is critical to begin by examining the production of meanings that contribute to a gendered construction of nursing. Gendering, and gendered work, cannot exist without these discursive practices.
