Abstract
Thus, an analysis of the works of Cesar Vallejo and Jose Angel Valente through the prism of San Juan de la Cruz permits the exploration of a trans-ontological spiritual evolution as it relates to the practice of poetry. In as much as poetry is itself the reflections of being, we are also exploring being itself in relation to both the secular world and the sacred realm. Although this thesis is historically grounded in specific poets and their reading of other poets and traditions, it also recognizes that the realities and experiences described here go beyond the merely historical; they participate in the a historic and the attemporal. In a word, they approach the transcendental realm of the sacred.
