Abstract
"The present volume contains the invited papers presented at the seventh
annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing held April 27-30,
1969, at Urbana by the Division of University Extension and the Graduate
School of Library Science of the University of Illinois. Like previous volumes of the Proceedings, the present papers continue
to reflect major advances in both the extent and the sophistication of the
application of data processing technology in all areas of library operations.
Discerning readers will note that the promise of on-line systems has already
begun to materialize and that we are now addressing ourselves to questions
concerning details and to optimal ""mixes"" of various on-line and batch
processing applications. The truth and impact of the latter observation were
underscored for all who attended the Clinic, not only by the masterful
accounts of Robert Kennedy, Charles Hoppel, and others who enjoy the
utilization of larger third generation hardware systems, but also by the highly
entertaining as well as informative report of the imaginative exploitation of
smaller second generation computers by Calvin Boyer and Jack Frost."
