Abstract
The aims of this work will be: (1) to argue the case for the integration of contemporary music into all levels of instrumental teaching; (2) to summarize the necessary technical and musical skills required for performing music composed since 1945 and to suggest a consistent and unified means of notation; (3) to summarize the didactic materials available for developing the technical know-how for contemporary flute music and to cross-reference the newer technical and musical skills with the problems explored in existing didactic materials; and (4) to make observations on aspects of teaching contemporary music that differ from prevalent aspects of teaching common-practice music and to outline the major parameters for developing a pedagogy of contemporary music, the goal being the development of the technical facility and musical comprehension necessary to give competent and convincing performances of the music of the present.
