Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine and report the history of Western Illinois University band from 1904-42, and its evolution from within the Illinois normal school movement. Following a brief historical review of the common and normal school's development in the eastern United States, the study examines (1) state normal school music departments and bands in Illinois, (2) the Western Illinois band's leadership and (3) role during the normal school and (4) teachers college years, (5) and a complete listing and pictorial reference of all reported Western Illinois band members from 1904-42. The study involved making comparisons between all five Illinois state normal school's music departments, bands, leadership, roles/duties, and program philosophies including the inclusion of teacher training opportunities in band. This was the first study to study and compare normal school bands within the United States.
