Abstract
This dissertation is a broad-based comparative examination of the sixteen settings of Psalm 116 contained in Burkhardt Grossmann's collection Angst der Hollen und Friede der Seelen, originally published at Jena in 1623. The study considers issues of text, texture, and treatment of mode, among others, with particular attention paid to evidence of Renaissance (16th Century) versus Baroque (17th Century) elements of style. Included are a broad look at each of the individual motets; a deeper comparison of the elements of style contained in the collection as a whole; and an in-depth analysis and comparison of two of the motets, those of Rogier Michael and Michael Praetorius, the two oldest contributors to the collection.
