Abstract
"Each of the five women currently performs and records music in Santiago, and all of them have toured internationally. They originate from different generations, class backgrounds, and political orientations. Margot Loyola moved to the capital during a decade of high urbanization, the 1940s. Since that time, she has become Chile's foremost educator and performer of urbanized ""traditional"" genres. Cecilia is a national icon and a dynamic performer of Chilean rock-n-roll, called la nueva ola. Rebeca Godoy performs for leftist organizations in the canto nuevo style originating from the dictatorship (1973--1990). Javiera Parra, the granddaughter of folklorist Violeta, leads the band Javiera y los Imposibles, which blends experimental performance with Javiera's ironic lyrics. Nicole, a pop-rock and ""tecno"" sensation, exhibits the absorption of North Atlantic musical style and marketing in her career."
