Abstract
The themes and ideas explored here are drawn from initial observations of three events at the Wall to Wall Guitar Festival at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Two particular ideas stand out in my collections of field notes. The first is an interest in the various ways that audience members choose to engage the performances. The second pertains to how performance environments provide cues to expected social interactions between audience members and artists. In order to provide context, I begin with a brief description of the three events. This is followed by a presentation of each theme, with examples drawn from field notes and discussions of resulting conceptualizations.

This course is designed for people who wish to gain a general understanding of qualitative research and for those who want to conduct studies using qualitative methods. Students examine the nature of qualitative research in various research “genres” intellectual traditions; practice the tools and methods of qualitative research, and discuss quality in qualitative research. The course is conducted as a mix of lecture, laboratory, and seminar. Students spend time doing intensive observations (“static” as well as “real time”), interviewing, and using these for reflections/interpretations, identifying research themes and issues.
