Abstract
Tumor growth suppression was associated with reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis, as quantified by Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry and the ApoptagRTM assay, respectively. Utilizing real time polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and the SYBR Green assay, mRNA was quantified in the liver, prostate, and tumors. Finasteride significantly decreased expression of 5-alpha-reductase-II, Bcl-2, and IL-6 in tumors. IL-6 was reduced in high lycopene and broccoli, P=0.05, and TNF-alpha was lower with low lycopene, P=0.05. Overall, the combination of tomato and broccoli powders was more effective at slowing tumor growth than either tomato powder or broccoli powder alone.
