Abstract
"This study examines the cultural exchange and interaction of the Dakotas of southern Minnesota and the Protestant missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) during the first half of the nineteenth century. I center my discussion around the question of identity: how do persons (or a group) respond when their identity as a Dakota or a missionary, a man or a woman, or an adult or a child is challenged as a result of their interaction with persons who have different beliefs, cultural practices, and religious ideas. I argue that through their interaction, both the Dakotas and the missionaries were forced to question their spiritual and cultural beliefs. In some cases, the identities of both groups were altered by their contact with a different culture. In most cases, however, the two groups reaffirmed their own identities and remained, by and large, ""satisfied to walk in their ways of their fathers.""."
