Abstract
Interweaving social and cultural history methods, the study adds emotional depth to existing literature on the industrial era and challenges understandings of cultural transmission. It employs an eclectic array of sources ranging from the writings of prominent industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie to grave markers in Chicago's potter's field to illuminate the complex political, social, and cultural relationships that fueled the United States' industrial ascent.
