Abstract
Not surprisingly, soldiers responded favorably to the Commission's work, and many were inspired by the group's spiritual overtures. Military officials, including General Ulysses S. Grant, expressed their approval of the Commission's activities, as did President Abraham Lincoln. While the Commission had its detractors, the majority of those who came into contact with the organization appreciated its labors.
