Abstract
Exploration of mercury capped rhenium carbido carbonyl clusters as potential labeling agents was initiated. The reaction of [PPh4]2[Re 7C(CO)21HgCl] with L-cysteine in aqueous acetone formed the complex [PPh4]2[Re7C(CO)21HgSCH 2CH(NH3)CO2]. In order to explore further reactions in aqueous solution, work was carried out with [Na]2[Re7C(CO) 21HgCl]. Preliminary work indicates that this complex has potential as an electron dense, easily detectable label for sulfhydryl sites in proteins.
