The chiral-at-metal complex [Os(N)(CH2SiMe3)MeCl 2]- forms in a reaction of a mixed tetraalkyl osmium nitrido complex with pyridinium chloride. Reactions between Ag2CrO 4 and [Os(N)(CH2SiMe3)MeCl2] - or [Os(N)(CH2SiMe3)PhCl2] - give chiral-at-metal heterobimetallic complexes that catalyze the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols using molecular oxygen to give aldehydes and ketones respecively. The bidentate phosphines dppe and (S,S)-CHIRAPHOS bind with the Os-Cr heterobimetallic complexes. Exposure to oxygen allows the chromium to oxidize the phosphine ligand producing phosphine oxide and the starting heterobimetallic complex.
