Abstract
Studies were conducted to determine if phytase would increase the protein efficiency ratio (PER) values (g weight gain per g protein intake) for 10 ingredients fed to chicks. Phytase (1200 U/kg) did not improve (P > 0.10) PER values for any of the ingredients evaluated, thereby indicating that phytase did not increase amino acid availability in several phytate-containing ingredients as assessed by a PER assay.
