Abstract
Corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is a corn co-product obtained after fermentation of corn for ethanol production. Several studies were conducted to determine the variability in nutrient composition among commercial samples of DDGS, the bioavailability of phosphorus (P) in DDGS as affected by various factors, and the effect of new processing technologies on the nutritional value of DDGS. The nutritional composition of DDGS varied greatly among 20 DDGS samples, with the greatest variation being observed for sodium and calcium content and digestibility of the amino acid, lysine. Relative bioavailability of P in DDGS ranged from 69 to 102% among samples. Both phytase enzyme and citric acid feed additives improved the bioavailability of P in DDGS. Increased heat processing of DDGS also increased bioavailability of P in DDGS, but it also decreased protein quality, particularly lysine digestibility. Particle sizes ranging from 542 to 837 mum had no effect on P bioavailability. Different processing technologies had substantial effects on the nutritional value of DDGS. Modified dry grind and quick germ quick fiber processing methods (to remove germ and fiber) resulted in increased protein and reduced fiber and fat content of DDGS. These two methods had varying effects on the P and lysine content of DDGS. An elusive process increased the protein and fat in DDGS and reduced the fiber markedly. Digestibility of amino acids was generally not affected by processing method or technology.
