Abstract
The nucleation and propagation of deformation twins has been examined in samples of a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic steel alloy deformed at room temperature under quasi-static and high strain rate compression. Post-mortem analysis of the deformed microstructures at different levels of applied strain reveals the nucleation of deformation twins is affected by the grain size distribution of the bulk material. In these materials, deformation twins are nucleated from planar slip bands in the grain interior. The size of these twins is governed by the interplanar spacing between the slip bands. Grain spanning deformation twins evolve from the overlap of these short twin segments; this represents a new model for how twins propagate long distances in grains containing a pre-existing defect structure.
