Abstract
The grammaticality of both regular finite verbs and defective verbs in Kannada find a natural explanation in the HPSG framework: A finite verb takes only that nominative noun phrase as its complement which bears information compatible to the index specified. Defective verbs are argued to be underspecified verbs which are less constrained in the kind of nominative noun phrase they can combine with. The dissertation proposes that the neuter agreement in impersonal constructions is sentential agreement.
