Abstract
Controlled multiple pit studies conducted under the above experimental conditions showed that pits do interact with each other and that the surrounding pits serve to stabilize the central pit and affect its lateral growth. Pit interactions was influenced by the distance of neighboring pits, number of pits and bulk concentrations of pH and chloride. For pits grown in 1M NaCl, pH 11, $-$650 mV (SCE), a critical radius of influence r$\sp*$ of 15 was determined. Since the interactions among pits under potentiostatic conditions was found to be affected by forced convection and bulk concentrations of Cl- and pH, it was concluded that the basis for these interactions was the overlapping of concentration distributions. The enhanced concentrations within the vicinity of neighboring pits increased the activity of the area between them allowing growth in the lateral direction. However, galvanostatic experiments showed that the pit growth rate was limited by the amount of current available and surface area.
