Abstract
The experiment also examined whether processing strategies and naive theories about mood effects would influence these phenomena. Processing strategies, measured by self-report, mediated the effect of mood on processing tasks, but not on evaluative tasks. In contrast, naive theories about mood influences moderated the effect of mood on evaluation, but not on processing. Such theories might have failed to influence processing either because individuals were unaware of how they process information or because they had incorrect theories about processing. Overall, the data underscore the importance of the experiential nature of affective states and help elucidate the different mechanisms that underlie the effect of mood in processing and judgment.
