Abstract
This study examined the association between adult attachment security, as measured by both attachment style questionnaires and the Adult Attachment Interview, and romantic relationship functioning in sample of dating couples over one year (115 couples at time 1, 57 couples at time 2). Relationship functioning was defined at multiple levels of analysis, through self-perceptions of relationships, observers' ratings of romantic partner interactions, and measures of physiological responding during interactions. Results indicated that the two traditions of adult attachment were not interchangeable in how they predicted relationship functioning concurrently or across time. This study contributes to the literature by providing initial evidence that attachment security prospectively predicts relationship functioning while controlling for prior levels of functioning.
