Abstract
"Many decision theories are formulated in terms of logical, algebraic statements that are deterministic, in the sense that they do not model a decision process via random variables. Empirical data, on the other hand, are intrinsically outcomes of random variables. Thus, there exists a conceptual and mathematical gap between deterministic decision theories and the empirical data used to test those theories. This body of work attempts to resolve this ""gap"" between deterministic models of decision making and the data collected to test them. I provide general methodologies to transform deterministic theories into probabilistic ones as well as develop general statistical methodologies to test these new, suitably transformed, decision theories. Under this framework, I examine the axiom of transitivity and the non-compensatory lexicographic semiorder model in detail."
