Abstract
Two studies tested the hypothesis that individuals' expectations for (i.e., standards), and perceptions of self and others are associated with affect intensity and affect variability. Study 1 (N=386) used structural equation modeling of questionnaire data to test these hypothesized associations. Study 2 (N=99) used path analyses of data collected using an event sampling method in which on-line measures of affective experiences as well as perceptions of self and others were collected. Higher levels of affect intensity were associated with higher self and other-standards, and with more self- and other-instability. There was also some evidence of affect intensity being associated with perceived treatment by others. Higher levels of affect variability were associated with more self- and other-instability.
