Abstract
Focusing on the writing Emma completed for her last year of course work at the university, and using interviews conducted as Emma wrote these texts, this study reinforces earlier research that suggests that all students do not have equitable access to academic discourse conventions and that not everyone who is able to master these conventions will be viewed in the same way. This study investigates some of the difficulties Emma encountered in presenting herself as both scholarly and female in her academic texts. It also explores the strategies she used to address those difficulties and the issues writing instructors may need to consider when teaching their students to use traditional writing conventions.
