Abstract
"The study proposes that a combination of richly detailed visuals and sound and the central narrative perspective of an intellectual outsider observer, puzzling out social relations, best characterize heritage cinema. The genre realizes an arguably feminine aesthetic sensibility, along with feminist themes that contribute to a prevalent ideology of ""thoughtful"" liberalism. Moreover, in replacing the female body with images of nature highly evocative of maternal plenitude, these films shift away from standard gratification of male visual pleasure. I argue in conclusion that in addressing generally human fantasies of regression, heritage films satisfy female spectatorial pleasure alongside, but not in opposition to, that of film theory's projected male spectator."
