Abstract
Electric drives are becoming widely accepted and are found in hybrid electric vehicles and in higher-end home appliances. Traditional drive designs separate the power electronics and the electric machine, which reduces the potential for integration and the possibility of beneficial opportunities. Opportunities exist in electric drives for integration of filter elements. Integration can consist of utilizing existing magnetic material for an input inductor, or using the rotor inertia to displace electrical filtering. Though integration, mass, cost, or both can be reduced. This could be particularly important for vehicular or residential electric machine and drive applications. An integrated inductor design is done using magnetic equivalent circuits and examined with finite element analysis. Rotor inertia is used to displace electrical passive components and thereby reduce the filter requirements of the dc-link capacitor. This is shown in permanent magnet synchronous machine drive simulation.
