Abstract
Depending on the contrast mechanism, the applications of SOCT imaging can be classified into two imaging modes: absorption-mode SOCT and scattering-mode SOCT. Absorption mode SOCT is concerned with mapping out the spectral absorption, while scattering mode SOCT is concerned with mapping out the spectral scattering. Absorption mode SOCT has the advantage of easy and definite data interpretation, but suffers the tradeoff between absorber concentration and depth-resolution. Absorption mode SOCT is especially useful when absorbing contrast agents, such as near-infrared dyes and nano-particles, are used in labeling tissue structure and enhancing contrast. Scattering mode SOCT has the advantage of localized analysis, but its results are often difficult to interpret due to various complicating factors such as the beam effect and the multiscatterer effect. Scattering mode SOCT is useful for sizing the scatterers, characterizing cells, and enhancing tissue contrast.
