Abstract
Low temperature properties of KBr doped with different concentrations of CN have been measured from 0.030K to 10K. The specific heat, thermal conductivity, and dielectric susceptibility are found to vary greatly with the concentration of CN. The concentrations 1%, 3%, 10%, 20%, and 50% CN were studied. For the lowest concentrations, the behavior is similar to that seen in other alkali halide crystals doped with low concentrations of non-interacting impurities. However, as the CN concentration is raised to 10%, a behavior which appears to be similar to that found in amorphous materials and many crystals containing disorder is observed. At a CN concentration of 50%, the behavior is similar to that of an amorphous epoxy. Comparison is made with amorphous materials and with a theory developed by Anderson, Halperin, Varma, and Phillips for two-level-systems in amorphous materials.
