Abstract
Using Hamiltonian methodology, we clarified a common misunderstanding of the origin of kinematic drifts. We studied the weakly nonlinear interactions between linear Alfven-Rossby waves. We used a spherical harmonic representation in which the fully nonlinear MHD equations are replaced by an equivalent system of first order ODEs. We computed the coupling coefficients analytically. Through numerical calculations, we found that even a weak magnetic field can greatly enhance the couplings between modes. We also found and explained the existence of very long-period quasi-periodic oscillations.
