Abstract
"The experience and expression of emotions at work has been the subject of much research in recent decades. Much of the literature has focused on examining ""rules"" for expressing emotions at work and the construct of job satisfaction. The current study focused on exploring the relationship between the expression of anger, gender of the expresser, gender of the observer, and power position of both the expresser and observer and evaluations made of the expresser on both work and personal variables. The study also examined gender role and gender role attitudes as variables that might mediate the evaluations made of the expresser. Using an analogue format, the current study found that those who expressed anger were evaluated more negatively than those not expressing anger. Additionally, those individuals in positions of less power (e.g., subordinate) were evaluated more negatively than those individuals in positions with more power (e.g., supervisor). However, the differences between the evaluations of angry and non-angry expressers were larger than the differences between the evaluations of the expressers in supervisor and subordinate power positions. No differences in evaluations were found as a result of the gender of the expresser or the gender of the observer. Gender role and gender role attitudes were not significantly related to evaluations made of the expresser."
