Abstract
A total of 210 undergraduates attending three universities in Chicago and in two western suburbs participated in the study. The participants were administered a 22-item questionnaire to determine their attitudes toward AAE speakers. It was found that taking courses in cultural diversity that included the study of AAE in the course of study indeed reduced differential attitudes toward speakers of AAE. Another significant finding was students who had taken two or more courses in cultural diversity, regardless of whether they included the study of AAE, were more accepting of different modes of discourse.
