Abstract
This study chronicles the experiences of teachers teaching in schools-within-a-school. It elicited their perceptions toward the organizational structure and management strategies of their small schools. Participants in this study are self-selected teachers in three schools-within-a-school housed in an urban community high school. The study was initiated in 1993 and documents data covering school years 1995--96, 1996--97, and 1997--98. The story is told from the voice of reflective practitioners using interviews, focus group sessions, a questionnaire, journals, and by collecting students' attendance data, extracurricular involvement data, and discipline referrals. This study is representative of a small school model illuminated by the complexity of educating students in a community urban high school in the 20th century. These findings suggest that schools-within-a-school represent a promising emerging strategy that is an alternative to the large high school, especially in an environment where disparity is prevalent.
