Abstract
Emphasis of the research was placed on the roles and responsibilities of the elementary building principal in the change process. Critical to the study was the ability of the building principal to adapt, lead, and survive the change process. Attention was placed on the perspectives of the school administrator, as the key change agent, attempting to implement steps necessary to achieve unitary status while maintaining a necessary fix on school improvement. School districts undergoing rapid change are notorious for using, abusing and losing administrators. The study focused on the ability of district administrators to plan, implement and adjust in an ever changing environment. Principals in the study perceived a strong need to be supported and to work collaboratively with their supervisors and the Court.
