Abstract
This study examined relationship satisfaction and responsibility attributions for relationship maintenance, following up on couples who have been married for 2--3 years, in order to explore how individuals change during the first few years of a marital relationship, with respect to positive and negative responsibility attributions and levels of relationship satisfaction. Significant relationships were found between positive attributions made to partner and relationship satisfaction, as well as between increased discrepancy between real and ideal attributions to self and decreased satisfaction. Current relationship satisfaction was also compared to premarital satisfaction, and findings indicated that these variables are only loosely connected, suggesting that satisfaction may be operationalized differently during different stages of the relationship.
