Abstract
A social constructivist qualitative methodology was used to examine 6 Latino college students' sexual health beliefs about the human papillomavirus (HPV). Data were collected through the use of in-depth interviews and analyzed utilizing a thematic analysis. Participants' narratives showed complexity in the way issues of racial/ethnic identity, notions of machismo, and gender socialization are interrelated. The following themes emerged: (a) constructions of masculinity, (b) gender socialization, (c) silence about sexual matters, (d) transmission and (mis) understandings about sexual health knowledge, and (e) perceived role regarding women's health concerns. Findings highlight the importance of incorporating cultural considerations when designing research and educational health programs with Latino college students.
