Abstract
Public education operates under the same liberal principles of the larger society. While children's constitutional rights should be protected, more legal leeway has been given to the public school setting. This dissertation argues that two important liberal values of autonomy and equality provide a strong foundation with which we fight the harm of hate speech without compromising children's constitutional rights. While autonomy is an important value and skill that needs to be taught in public schools, equality should be more strongly encouraged to address the harm of hate speech because it constitutes a solid basis for equal respect and equal opportunity.
