Abstract
Large multispecialty clinics employ a substantial number of physicians, and physicians are increasingly expected to be able to lead them. However, oftentimes neither education nor experiences prepare them for leading. This qualitative dissertation explores the processes whereby four large Midwestern multispecialty clinics provide leadership development for physicians. Respondents included upper level administrators responsible for providing or developing leadership programs for physicians, and physician leaders who had taken part in leadership development. Thirteen concepts relating to leadership development emerged, with Transaction, forming the core concept. A theoretical model demonstrates the relationships among the thirteen concepts, and their relationship to Transaction. Organizations should monitor the nature and the quality of the Transactions between themselves and physician-leaders, to ensure that expectations are clear and that the transactions are honest.
