Abstract
Regarding the analysis of positive and negative politeness strategies, none of the students used positive or negative politeness strategies exclusively. When comparing the occurrences of the two types of strategies within the same group of students, the Thai and American students both preferred positive politeness strategies to the negative politeness strategies. The purpose of the essay is to minimize the distance between the speaker and the addressee. Thus, there is more need for positive politeness strategies, i.e. showing optimism and interest, offering benefit, and being direct. However, when comparing the use of positive politeness strategies in all sub-categories between the two groups, the Thai students used more positive politeness strategies than the American students did.
