Abstract
Students, parents, and administrators generally held positive views regarding their music programs. Teachers expressed frustrations regarding music budget uncertainties, heavy workloads, material concerns, and staffing shortfalls. Following the resignation of two (of three) music teachers in one evaluated school (just prior to study's start), 1/3 of the students in the school received additional technology instruction instead of music as only one vacated position was filled. Two of the five music teachers in this study were not state certified, and analysis of collected data revealed that the most appropriate and effective teaching methods were utilized by certified teachers. Collectively, compliance with Edison's own goals for music instruction in these three schools is mixed. Strategies for music program improvements are included.
