Abstract
Major findings included the following: conversation analysis could be applied in a practical fashion to the assessment of second-language pragmatics (SLP), though low reliabilities gathered from the pool of upper-theta examinees appeared to make psychometrically-driven SLPT problematic; therefore, a hermeneutic approach to reliability and validity is recommended for SLPT; the traditional DCT should be discarded as an instrument for measuring online SLP ability. Also found was that NS participant responses did not diverge greatly from the operationalized norm, though the divergence did render validation somewhat problematic. Suggestions for further research are offered.
