Abstract
The central mission of public schools is to provide an appropriate education to all students. Special programs that target one segment of the school population are politically vulnerable. Gifted education is particularly susceptible to attack, especially in times, such as today, of reduced state funding for education. However, in a climate focused on minimal standards and low achieving students, educators must focus attention on ways to challenge all learners. An analysis of gifted education can offer insight into the strategies used to differentiate instruction to challenge all learners. Moreover, research is needed to describe the uniqueness of gifted education, in terms of curriculum, instruction, and students, in order to better understand the educational needs of this special population.
